What are the Components in a COL Room?

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the appearance and function of each component in a COL room.

Here are the components:

Projector:

The projector allows students in the classroom to view content from the Instruction Computer or your laptop on the large screen. This guide includes details on how to turn on the projector.

Microphone:

Each COL room is equipped with microphones to capture audio for recordings. There are two types of microphones that may be installed:

Shure Intelligent Microphone

These high-performance microphone arrays capture clear audio from any position in the room, even if someone does not speak clearly. These appear as white panels mounted on the ceiling at the front of the room. A green light indicates that the microphone is on.

Legacy Analog Microphone

Some older rooms still use drop-down analog microphones. These are positioned on the ceiling at the front of the room, and some rooms may also have an additional microphone at the back. When using rooms with legacy microphones, follow these tips for best audio quality:

Camera:

Classrooms are equipped with a camera, situated at the back of the room, which is designed to record the whiteboard and teaching area during the lecture. In trimodal rooms, there is an additional camera at the front of the room, which may be used to record students as part of a Zoom meeting. Only the rear camera is connected to COL. Trimodal rooms also have buttons to move the camera, located on the touch panel. Most rooms have high-definition cameras, however, some rooms use standard-definition cameras.

Whiteboard Capture System:

Most rooms have a system to record what you write on the room's whiteboard, although some rooms do not have this system. Be sure you know which, if any, whiteboards are equipped with a capture device before you start your lecture. Don't begin writing on the board in Mimio rooms until the scheduled start time of your lecture. To learn more about how to use the whiteboard system, see this article. Please return all markers, erasers, and other components to their original locations after you conclude your lecture.

Crestron Touch Panel:

Trimodal rooms, and some other rooms, have touchscreen panels on the instruction desk, which are used to control functions of the room you are in, such as the projector, Zoom Room functionality, and camera. In some cases, this panel may have additional functions, such as DVD player, recording, or light control, depending on what is installed in the room. You may see one of these models in the room:
