How to Switch On the Projector in a Classroom Operations Room
The purpose of this article is to explain how to switch on the projection system and display the classroom Instructor’s PC or professor’s personal laptop in a Standard, Upgraded, or Tri-modal room.
Depending on the room you are in, projectors are controlled with one of two remotes, a Crestron touch panel, or a Q-SYS touch panel. In order to determine which kind of room you are in, first look to see if the room you are in has a remote (either Epson or Panasonic) or a touch panel on the instructor’s desk. If there is a touch panel, you can identify the type by looking at the name shown slightly below the screen on the lower border. Then, after determining what devices your classroom has, you can see specifically what kind of room it is:
Standard room – Epson remote or Panasonic remote. No touch panels will be in these rooms.
Upgraded room – Epson Remote, Panasonic remote, or Crestron touch-panel. These rooms can have any of the three.
Tri-modal room – Crestron touch panel or Q-SYS touch panel. These rooms should not use remotes to turn on the projector. Tri-modal rooms are also the only classrooms that will have a Q-SYS touch panel.
Standard or Upgraded Room, Epson Remote
To turn on the Epson projector, point the remote at the projector and press the On () button. The projector beeps once in response to the remote, and a status light on the projector begins to flash when turning on. The projector takes several seconds to fully turn on, during which time the brightness gradually increases. When the light stops flashing, the projector is ready to use.
To turn off the projector, press the Standby () button until the projector shows “Press
to turn off”, then press Standby (
) again. The projector will turn off. If the projector does not respond to the second press, release the button for two seconds and then press again. The fan in the projector will stop when turned off, which is something you can listen for to confirm its status.
Standard or Upgraded Room, Panasonic Remote
To turn on the Panasonic projector, point the remote at the projector and press the red power (/I) button. A status light on the projector begins to flash in response to the remote. When the light stops flashing and turns green, the projector is ready to use. To turn off the projector, press the red power (
/I) button on the remote until the projector asks for confirmation, then press red power (
/I) again. The projector will turn off and status light on projector will turn orange. If the projector does not respond to the second press, release the button for two seconds and then press again. Similar to the ESPON remote, the fan in the projector will also stop when turned off, which is another thing you can listen for to confirm the projector is off.
Upgraded or Tri-modal Room, Crestron Touch Panel
Some Tri-modal rooms, and some Upgraded rooms, have a Crestron touch panel. This panel is used to control all room functions - the use of a remote is not required or permitted in these rooms. To turn on the projector system in this room, first confirm that the touch panel is on. If the screen is black, touch it once to activate the panel. Press the large button on the display to begin the process of turning the system on. It may take several seconds to turn on the system.
Rooms which have an integrated Zoom functionality require you to share the screen of the Instructor’s PC through Zoom. On the “Video” screen (which you can find by looking at the bottom of screen next to display controls, volume, and shutdown), press the “Zoom” button. To switch between the Instructor PC and Instructor HDMI (for personal laptops) and the Zoom controls, press the button, which is either visible on the right side of the panel or by tapping the small white “pill” line on the top center of the screen.
Zoom may take a few moments to appear. If the “Sharing Content” screen does not automatically appear, press the blue “Share Content” button.
To turn off the projector, look for the “Shutdown” button in the lower right of the touch panel screen options. If the sources such as the “Instructor PC”, “Instructor HDMI” or “Zoom” buttons are not already visible, press .
When you are asked if you are certain you want to shut down the system, press Yes. The system then shuts down. This process may take several seconds.
Note: Do not press the button above the
button. This will not power down the system.
Tri-modal Room, Q-SYS Touch Panel
Projectors in tri-modal rooms with a Q-SYS Touch Panel are controlled in much the same way as Crestron rooms. To power the system up, touch the panel once to wake it up, then touch the blue power () button at the bottom of the Touch Panel's screen. If you see nothing on the projector screen, be sure that the "Projector" green square mute selector button on the right of the display reads "ACTIVE", not "MUTE". If "MUTE" displays, touch the green selector button once to change it to "ACTIVE" and this will activate the projector.
To turn the Q-SYS system off:
Touch the red sqaure "End Lecture" button and then touch "Proceed".
