Existing Office applications (MSI-based versions) are removed (both 32-bit and 64-bit installations). This includes Project and Visio. Versions 2016 and older are typically MSI-based while 2019 and newer are not. Office components are removed to account for Microsoft's compatibility limitations between different Office versions and installer technologies, as described here: Supported scenarios for installing different versions of Office, Project, and Visio on the same computer
The upgrade installs 64-bit Office. Project and Visio, for example, must also be 64-bit in order to co-exist with the main Office 365 suite. Other limitations of 32-bit applications, like add-ins, are described by Microsoft here: Microsoft Office 365 version comparison. If you are unsure if your software will continue working after the upgrade, please do not proceed.
If your license provides a Standard or Professional edition of Project/Visio 2019, Project/Visio 2019 can be re-installed. For licenses providing an older version of either product, if your license provides (active) Software Assurance, Project/Visio 2019 can be re-installed.
The Office suite uses BlueKey for activation, while Project/Visio uses a DePaul-hosted activation service.
Because the Office suite uses BlueKey, you can activate it so long as you have an Internet connection. For Project/Visio, you need to connect to the DePaul network using the Remote Access VPN
The Office suite requires you to be online once every 30 days. For Project/Visio, you need to connect to the DePaul network every 180 days.
If you are connected to the DePaul network, you are not prompted to sign into the main Office suite after you launch an application. If you are off-network, on the first launch, you are prompted to sign in with your BlueKey credentials. Subsequent launches do not require you to sign in.
The Office suite and Project/Visio are configured to be updated automatically by Microsoft.
