SFTP Options for Uploading Files

Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is commonly used to upload files to servers for both curricular and research purposes, often to present content to the Web. The security of DePaul's network means that you will need to utilize one of the following options for uploading content through SFTP software.

DePaul Virtual Lab (with Filezilla)

Prior to using this method, please note the following:

  • Copy any files or folders to be uploaded to your OneDrive. For usage directions for OneDrive, including access and upload of files to OneDrive, please refer to OneDrive documentation.
  • While settings, configurations, and files you create on a Virtual Lab machine may persist between login sessions, the Virtual Lab is not meant to be a permanent storage resource for files you create. Regular maintenance and instances occur where machines need to be redeployed and local user profile configurations/data erased. You should always keep/transfer a copy of any files you create on a Virtual Lab machine on your OneDrive to ensure you do not lose data.

1. Access the DePaul Virtual Lab.

For detailed information about the DePaul Virtual Lab you can refer to the Virtual Lab documentation.

To access the Virtual Lab, you will need to use one of the following methods:

Preferred - Windows app or macOS client

Fallback - Connect using a web browser

If neither of the above methods works or is not accessible from your machine, you can attempt to connect using a web browser. The steps for connecting are below:

Open a web browser on your machine. Go to https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/arm/webclient  - you may be prompted to sign in. Do so with your BlueKey (@depaul.edu) username and password.

When the main screen comes up, click on the "DePaul Virtual Lab" icon.

Choose which of your local resources the remote computer is allowed to access (you can leave the defaults checked).

When prompted, you will be asked once again for your BlueKey username (@depaul.edu) and password. Enter those into the text boxes provided. The remote session will being to load in the window.

Regardless of which of the methods you use, once connected, you will be in a remote desktop instance with a Windows-based virtual lab machine.

2. Sign in to OneDrive from your virtual lab machine if needed.

Your OneDrive will need to be signed in to access the web files you copied to it. You may be signed in automatically when you are in your virtual lab machine.

However, you may also be prompted to sign in to OneDrive once in the virtual lab machine, as shown above. If so, follow the procedure linked below to sign in to OneDrive.

3. Copy web files to be uploaded from your OneDrive to the virtual lab machine's Documents folder.

Access OneDrive by double-clicking the OneDrive icon in the System tray in the lower right hand corner (it will look like a blue cloud ).

This will open a window similar to the above with your OneDrive folder. Select the web folders/files you intend to upload and copy them to the virtual lab machine's Documents folder by dragging them into the Documents folder in the left navigation pane. This action should copy, not move, the files (you should still have a copy on your OneDrive – be sure to confirm this so you retain copies of your files).

4. Open Filezilla and configure a New Site for SFTP access from the Site Manager.

Access Filezilla by clicking the Windows icon in the taskbar, then searching for Filezilla in the search bar. Click on the Filezilla icon to open the program. Be sure to click on the Filezilla search result that lists it as an App at the bottom.

Go to File > Site Manager. You’ll be configuring a New Site. Change the Protocol to SFTP, then place in configuration information for the target server you will be uploading to. This information will have been given to you by a professor (for class) or by an IS staff member (for deployed servers you administer).

  • Hostname: The hostname of the server (ex. studentweb.cdm.depaul.edu)
  • Port: 22
  • User: Your BlueKey username (without @depaul.edu at the end)
  • Password: Your BlueKey password. You will not be allowed to enter one here but will be prompted for it when connecting.

Click Connect at the bottom once you are ready to connect to the server. Enter your BlueKey password when prompted and click OK. You will then connect to the target server.

5. Upload your content from the Documents folder to the public_html folder on the target server.

Once connected to the target server, click on Documents on the left side, which will take you to the local Documents folder on the virtual lab machine that has the files you previously copied. On the right side, double-click on the destination folder (ex. public_html). This is the target folder where you will upload your content. You may not see a target folder, in which case you will be uploading to your root folder on the server (typically your username folder, IE. Remote site: /home/<username>, where username is typically your BlueKey username).

Select the web folders/files on the left and copy them to the right (you can drag them to the right pane or hold Shift then click to select your content then right-click and select Upload). After a short delay, the files should appear on the right and your content will be uploaded.

If this is website content, be sure to check your website address as told to you by a professor (for class) or from your own configuration (for deployed servers you administer) in a browser.

6. (If relevant) Copy any files that you created using software on the Virtual Lab server back to your OneDrive before logging off.

If you create files in programs in the Virtual Lab such as Notepad, Paint, and similar, it is best to copy those files to your OneDrive before you end your session. Such files are not meant to be stored only on the Virtual Lab machine - once again, Virtual Lab machines are not meant to be permanent storage for files you have created. Data is not guaranteed to be saved to the Virtual Lab so it is always best to save and move any files you create or edit to your OneDrive when you finish with your virtual lab session.

Click on the blue cloud icon  in the lower right corner of the virtual lab machine, then click on “Open folder” at the bottom. This will open a window with your OneDrive contents on the right.

Local files you create on the Virtual Lab machine are usually saved in one of the pinned locations on the left, below your OneDrive folder. In the example above, the file is stored in the Documents folder.

Navigate to the folder where you saved the files you created on the Virtual Lab machine by clicking on the appropriate folder on the left. You will see the files on the right side, in the main window.

Click on the file you want to copy (or to select multiple files, hold down CTRL while you click each file to save), then right-click on the file(s) and choose “Copy” from the options that come up.

Right-click on your OneDrive folder on the left, then choose “Paste” from the options that come up. The files you selected will be copied to the root of your OneDrive folder and you will be able to access them anywhere else you login to your OneDrive.

Afterwards, log off the Virtual Lab machine by clicking the Windows icon to bring up the app menu, selecting your name when it comes up, and choosing to Sign Out.
