Teleworking

For DePaul employees who work in a position and a department which supports teleworking arrangements, there is a policy providing guidance on employee expectations, responsibilities, and technology options. This webpage is intended only as a supplemental resource, please make sure you are familiar with the official DePaul policy, which can be found here. Teleworkers should also make sure they are familiar with DePaul's policy for access to and use of data.

Using a Personal Computer for Teleworking

If you are using your personal computer for teleworking purposes, there are a few caveats and limitations you must be aware of.  First, you must not save any sensitive DePaul data on this computer.  Second, with few exceptions, DePaul-licensed software may not be installed on your personal computer (See software.depaul.edu for exceptions to this).  This arrangement is most useful for individuals who only need access to web-based resources to perform their job functions.

Remotely Accessing Your DePaul Computer for Teleworking

Before you can remotely access your DePaul computer from a remote location, it must be configured properly to ensure any remote usage of your computer will be secure and protected.  You can find instructions for how to do this on the IS website for both Windows and Mac computers.

Using a Windows Laptop for Teleworking

Use of the computer by the teleworker should be limited to conducting DePaul business.  The computer should not be accessible via Windows remote desktop while being used off-campus.  This laptop must have the standard DePaul software build managed by Information Services, and must be under active warranty.  DePaul's standard build includes these required attributes, which must not be modified: disk encryption (BitLocker), and centrally managed anti-virus software.  Teleworkers must use the DePaul virtual private network(VPN) while the computer is in use off-campus.

The first logon of the teleworker to this computer must be performed on campus while the computer is physically attached to the DePaul network.  Additionally, the user must log into the computer while connected to the DePaul on campus network at least once every 30 days in order to avoid potential service disruptions.

Using a Mac Laptop for Teleworking

Use of the computer by the teleworker should be limited to conducting DePaul business.  The computer should not be accessible through remote desktop while being used off-campus.  This laptop must be under active warranty and have been through Information Services Mac setup procedures, wherein DePaul management software will be installed, and the user must not modify or remove the DePaul management software.  All accounts on the computer must be set up with strong passwords (8 or more characters, with at least one numeral and one special character), and encryption of the hard drive must be turned on. The encryption key must be noted and stored centrally with Information Services by emailing it to macencryption@depaul.edu along with the serial number of the computer.

Teleworkers must use the DePaul virtual private network (VPN) while the computer is in use off-campus. The user must log into the computer while connected to the DePaul on campus network at least once every 30 days in order to avoid potential service disruptions.  Note: Mac users should consult with IS before upgrading to the latest version of MacOS to ensure compatibility with needed systems and software.
