Zoom: Frequently Asked Questions


Who can use Zoom at DePaul?

All current DePaul faculty, staff, and students, as well as retirees and emeritus faculty, can use Zoom for hosting online and video meetings; recording meetings; instant messaging. DePaul faculty, staff and students may invite anyone to participate in Zoom meetings that they host.

Faculty members must setup Zoom meetings for their classes, and then invite students to the meeting.

Students do not have the ability to make cloud recordings, they can only make local recordings of their meetings.

Are there any limitations to Zoom meetings?

Zoom meetings are limited to a maximum of 300 participants. If you need to host a Zoom meeting for more than 300 participants, there are Large Meeting licenses available for 1000 max participants.  If you need to host a meeting with a capacity larger than 300 participants, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@depaul.edu or (312) 362-8765.

How can I use Zoom in a D2L course that I teach?

Zoom utilizes an LTI integration with D2L. You may find additional details and instructions on the Teaching Commons website.

How long are recordings available?

Meeting hosts can record meetings locally, or in the cloud, and they will be available under the My Recordings section. Please note that cloud recordings will only be available/downloadable for 120 days, after which time they will be deleted.

Can I host a webinar with Zoom?

Zoom offers several licenses for webinars based on participant totals.  If you are interested in hosting a webinar, please call the Help Desk at (312) 362-8765 or email helpdesk@depaul.edu with the details of your request and someone from Information Services will discuss your needs with you.  Information on webinars is available here.

What is the difference between a meeting or large meeting and a webinar?

Zoom webinars and meetings are different, and offer hosts and participants different controls and functions.  For more information on what makes a webinar different than a meeting, please refer to the documentation here.

How can I create and manage IM (Chat) groups in Zoom?

Using Zoom Outside of D2L?

A good way to create meetings: Download the Zoom extension for Microsoft Outlook and you can set up Zoom meetings directly from Outlook.

A good way to join Zoom meetings: Download the Zoom Desktop App or Zoom Mobile App. Go to the Zoom meeting invite in Outlook and click the link to join. It will automatically move you to the Zoom Desktop App for the meeting.
