What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is a cloud file storage and collaboration service provided by Microsoft. Check out these brief tutorial videos: Getting started with Microsoft OneDrive. You are allocated 5TB, or 5000 GB, for your OneDrive storage.

What type of DePaul data can I store on OneDrive?

Why use Microsoft 365 if I'm comfortable using something else?

Although you may be accustomed to using other productivity software, Microsoft 365 and its apps are important and central tools in many organizations and institutions. If you haven't learned how to use these apps, it's a good time to start using them. Microsoft offers quick and helpful training modules for all of their apps.

Access files on your computer, mobile app, or web browser. Check out this quick intro video about OneDrive. You access, edit, and share your files on all your devices, wherever you are. You can also stay connected, share your documents and photos with friends and family, and collaborate in real time with Microsoft 365 apps. Access OneDrive by using your BlueKey login credentials (username@depaul.edu and password).

OneDrive is storage in the cloud. There are many ways to access your cloud files, or upload files to your OneDrive cloud storage. Make sure to setup files so that they backup (or sync) automatically. You can view, download, and upload files through a web browser at onedrive.com. You can also download the OneDrive app to a Mac, smartphone, or older Windows computer to sync and manage files.

All files go to the same place. Lose a device, you don't lose the files (as long as you are syncing your files to the cloud). Instead of saving files to a computer or phone's hard drive, choose to save in OneDrive (once OneDrive has been installed on your computer). When a file is saved in OneDrive, any changes are automatically saved when the file is connected to a mobile or WiFi network.

How do I sync my files with OneDrive?

OneDrive Sync:

If you have Windows 10 or Office 2016, this utility may already be installed on your machine and can easily be connected to your Office 365 account. It allows you to sync files between your computer and the cloud. By default, it will maintain a synced copy of all of your files in both locations. You can work directly with your files in File Explorer and access your files even when you are offline. If it is not already installed on your machine, or for more information and instructions on setting up OneDrive Sync see: Sync with OneDrive.  macOS users can find setup instructions and links to install the sync client here

OneDrive Files On-Demand:

Files On-Demand is a setting within OneDrive Sync that is disabled by default. When this setting is enabled, you can choose which files will use storage space on your local machine. You can still work with your files from File Explorer but will not be able to access any files designated as “online-only” without Internet access. For more information and instructions for setting up OneDrive Files On-Demand see: Use OneDrive files on Demand.

Syncing your Team Files:

Microsoft Teams users can synchronize files stored in your Team automatically to your computer.  If you have OneDrive sync enabled, simply click the the Sync icon in the Files tab in the Teams client, or the Sync menu in the Documents page.  Your Teams files will now be available on your local computer (in Windows Explorer, or in macOS, your OneDrive folder and/or the Finder).

What is the upload/download size limitations?

Upload and download speeds performed outside the DePaul campus network are subject to limits set by your internet provider. Available local storage is required and should be considered when using the OneDrive sync client for any download or upload of large files.
