EndNote

EndNote is an electronic reference management application that allows you to quickly generate citations and bibliographies.  With its Cite While You Write integration with Word, Pages, and Open Office Writer, and its 3,900+ styles to choose from, EndNote makes bibliographies easy.

EndNote is available to the DePaul students, faculty, and staff to use when writing academic papers.  It is available in all computer labs and for your personal computers as a free download.   Versions are available for both Windows and Mac computers.

Getting Started with EndNote 20

EndNote 20 Overview

Get started with this quick video introduction to EndNote.

Using DePaul Library Databases with EndNote

Save time by importing references directly from the DePaul library databases. Bear in mind that our setup here at DePaul requires you to search in a database and then export your citations into EndNote. You cannot open EndNote and access our database subscriptions directly.

  1. Start by searching the Library database for articles to cite. Please ask a librarian if you would like assistance with using a particular database.
  2. Once an article has been selected, navigate to the top right hand corner of the webpage. Click the Cite/Export link.
  3. Then, click Export to EndNote / Reference Manager.
  4. EndNote will open with your article fully cited and ready to use in your research.

Alternatives to EndNote

Zotero

Zotero [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share your research sources. It lives right where you do your work—in the web browser itself.    It's also possible to take advantage of the best features of each, or to share Zotero libraries with colleagues using EndNote or vice versa. Both programs can read and write a standard citation file format called RIS, which means references can be converted back and forth. For more information and instructions visit Zotero.

Microsoft Word Citations and Bibliography Tools

Microsoft Word has its own citation and bibliography generation tool.  Although it is not as powerful and flexible as EndNote or Zotero, the fact that it is built right into your word processor makes it easy and convenient to use.
