Renew/Activate Windows License from Off-Campus

Remote workers using DePaul Windows computers who cannot or do not come to campus for a period of time may receive warnings from Windows that their license will expire.  DePaul's Windows license manager is unavailable from off-campus, so remote workers will need to take the following steps to renew their license. 


  1. Log into the Remote Access VPN.  You can find instructions on installing and using the Remote Access VPN here
  2. Open a Command Prompt as Administrator. 
    1. Hit the Windows button or click on the Windows Start button
    2. Type CMD into the search bar
    3. Right-click the Command Prompt app when it appears in the result list and click 'Run As Administrator
      Run CMD as Admin
  3. Type in the command slmgr /ato


The command in step 3 should force your computer to renew its license with DePaul's Windows Key Server. If you experience any issues with this process, please contact the Help Desk.
