Instructions for Installing Updated Pulse Secure VPN Client
The Virtual Private Network (VPN) client allows you to securely connect from your workstation to DePaul's Campus Network or to DePaul's Data Centers. Connecting to DePaul's Virtual Private Network (VPN) through the Pulse Secure client requires the use of the Microsoft Authenticator app and BlueKey multi-factor authentication (MFA). You will need to download the Microsoft Authenticator app and setup BlueKey MFA at bluekey.depaul.edu/multifactorsetup (if you haven't already done so) prior to accessing the VPN. Learn more about registering for BlueKey MFA.
Before connecting to the VPN with Pulse Secure VPN and BlueKey MFA, you first need to determine a few things:
- Am I a Data Center user or a Remote Access user?
- Am I a current Pulse Secure VPN user? If so, do I have a compatible version of Pulse?
- Am I connecting with a Windows PC or a Mac?
View more detailed instructions for connecting to the VPN for Windows PC and Mac users.
There are two different types of VPN connections. Are you a Data Center user or a Remote Access user?
Examples of services used by Remote Access users:
- If you are working off campus and need to access certain services (examples below) that are only available on campus
- Access to the U and W drives
- DePaul licensed software that can only be used by connecting to the VPN (such as SPSS Statistics)
- Access to Imagenow from off campus (with no other data center access)
- Non-production Peoplesoft environments
Examples of services used by Data Center users:
- Direct database access, either Oracle or Microsoft SQL. Examples include access to CS, data warehouse, IRMA and other databases.
- Shell (sftp or ssh) access to DePaul servers. Examples include access to psftprd and webprd servers.
- Remote desktop access to DePaul servers.
- Web and desktop applications with limited access. Examples include access to the Transact system, Titanium Scheduler, and the camera viewing servers.
Do I need to remove my current Pulse Secure VPN file?
Many current VPN users have an older version of Pulse Secure VPN and will need to uninstall and re-install this software. If your version of Pulse is 9.1.12 or higher, you will not need to update this file, but you will still need to change your configuration. Skip down to the "New Configuration Settings" below. If your version is lower than 9.1.12, you will need to uninstall Pulse Secure VPN from your computer and then follow the instructions to Install the new version and configuration below.
IMPORTANT! Before removing the older version of Pulse Secure from your computer (if you were connecting to the VPN before), make sure to check your connection on Pulse Secure to see if it's either listed as "remote" or "datacenter". There are two different types of connections, and it's important to know which one you need.
If you have a version of Pulse Secure lower than version 9.1.12, use
this file to remove your existing VPN client (This file is located in OneDrive. You may need to login to access it.). Once you open this file, you must answer two important questions:
- You will be asked if you want to completely remove Pulse Secure and all of its components? – answer YES
- You will be asked if you want to save current Pulse Secure configuration settings? – answer NO (very important)
